Monsoon Tourism in Kerala

Monsoon Tourism is getting popularity in Kerala especially in Alappuzha and Kumarakom. South West Monsoon or Edavapathi (in the month of Edavam in Malayalam Calendar) starts at the end of May or first week of June. In 2010 it is expected to reach kerala by May 30th.

Thulavarsham or North East Monsoon starts with the Malayalam month of Thulam or mid of October.

According to Ayurdeva Monsoon is the best time for rejuvenation therapies.

Houseboats in Kerala

The predominant way to experience Kerala backwaters is houseboats which are also known as Kettuvalloms. In Kerala, house boats are used for housing, transport, commuting, and commerce.

Kettuvallom is a country boat that was used in the early days mainly for the transport of goods from the isolated interior villages to the towns. With the advent transportation services and infrastructure gradually Kettuvalloms went off the scene. Now they are back as houseboats which attracts tourist.

Kumarakom is situated 12 km away from Kottayam, on the banks of Lake Vembanad. A Bird Sanctury is located at Kavanattinkara near Kumarakom.
